Loggins Fundraiser and Memorial Set

The San Clemente Chamber of Commerce establishes a fund to help the children of a Marine sergeant killed by an Orange County sheriff's deputy. Meanwhile, Camp Pendleton schedules a memorial service.

Local groups, individuals and businesses have come together to support the family of the late Marine Sgt. Manny Loggins Jr., who was shot by an Orange County sheriff's deputy after a predawn traffic stop on Feb. 7.

A memorial for Loggins is scheduled for 3 p.m. Feb. 24 at the Marine Memorial Chapel at Camp Pendleton, according to a memorial Facebook page set up for Loggins.

Meanwhile, a scholarship fund has been set up for Loggins' children.

The following is a press release from Wayne Eggleston, head of the Heritage of San Clemente Foundation. Eggleston is a former San Clemente city councilman and prominent local Marine booster. The foundation is responsible for the upkeep of Park Semper Fi.

The Heritage of San Clemente Foundation and the San Clemente Chamber of Commerce have joined together to organize a fundraising effort on behalf of the children of Sgt. Loggins.

The Fund will be called Sgt. Loggins Childrens' Memorial Fund. The purpose of the Fund is to raise funds for the education of the Loggins children. Wayne Eggleston, the executive director of the Heritage of San Clemente Foundation will assist in fundraising activities. The San Clemente Chamber of Commerce will handle the financial aspects and reporting through Chuck Narey, CPA.

Contributions can be made through any branch of Farmer & Merchants Bank and one can also mail their contributions directly to the following:
