From Southern California, the moon will not be perfectly centered on the sun. The 2 1/2-hour eclipse, starting at about 5:25 p.m., will be partial rather than full.

Forget about the Sunday night blues: Southern Californians will have a ringside seat to watch the partial eclipse of the sun beginning around 5:25 p.m. The moon will partially block the sun, resulting in a "ring of fire'" around the dark disk of the moon. "From start to finish, it looks like something is taking a bite out of the sun, which keeps getting smaller and smaller,'' said Laura Danly, curator at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles. "It's a very unusual sight." Observers can steal a glance with the naked eye but should not look directly at the sun for more than a second or so. "Sunglasses are not enough,'' Danly said. "You can damage your retinas if you look directly at the sun for any length of time. It's very risky -- it can …
Students from schools across Orange County showcase their art at the Orange County Green Fair.
Paint, paper, bottles, aluminum and used tea bags were just a few of the materials transformed into art at the Orange County Green Fair's art walk. Created by students living in Orange County, every piece of art on display represented the artist's views on "Going Green." While some of the art displayed messages of conservation and sustainability, others used recycled items to create something new and original. Check out the slideshow from the student art walk above.

A local charity that helps connect autistic kids with musical instruments is holding a bash at the Skullcandy headquarters at Camino Real.
As local charity Rock the Autism gears up for its Saturday fundraising bash at Skullcandy headquarters, the organization's founder said things have never been better for the group. The event will start at 2 p.m and feature three bands, a few acoustic acts, DJs, a food truck and various activities. Donations to the nonprofit, which connects autistic children with musical instruments and instruction, have grown exponentially over the last year, said founder Rocky Neidhardt. "Things are going really good," said founder Rocky Neidhardt. "It's probably more than tripled since our last interview [summer 2011]. We got our 501c3 status from the feds. We started a program down at the Boys & Girls Club -- we provide instruments and they get to sing …

The Mint displays and sells surf-related fine art photos and paintings.
The Mint Fine Art Gallery just opened next to the new T. Patterson surf shop in North Beach. Both are in the same North Beach plaza as Cycle Werks on El Camino Real. Mint owner Mark Gabriel spent years as a surfer and professional snowboarder, and developed art and photo contacts while shooting videos for surf brand Volcom. His gallery is currently showing work from four photographers and a painter. Gabriel started out in retail, running a surf shop, but felt the market was too crowded by bigger stores. "If you're not going to stock a million dollars in product, a lot of people will go [to stores that] do, so it's hard to compete," he said. The Mint Gallery previously operated in Dana Point, but Gabriel wanted a spot along Pacific Coast …

Jim Gaffigan offers an amusing take on the favorite sea creature of environmentalists.
As a counterpoint to the recent news of whales getting tangled in fishing lines, how about a little whale humor? Comedian Jim Gaffigan, whose popular observations cover everything from bacon to Catholicism, has a new bit on whale weight problems and predators.

The conservative '70s-era rocker played to a sold out crowd at the Coach House Thursday. Yeah, he had plenty to say.
The Motor City Madman isn't about soft messages. Ted Nugent, the self-proclaimed “Great White Buffalo,” performed a flawless show Thursday night with his ear-piercing band the Nigerian Rebels to a sold out crowd at the Coach House. A mountain of stacked Bad Cat and Eddie Van Halen 5150 signature amplifiers were creatively decorated with two lifelike AR-15 assault rifles that reassured the audience of second amendment advocates that this was, indeed, a Ted Nugent show. “Hey Coach House, I just go to work everyday and [tick] off [people] without even trying,” screamed Nugent halfway into the song Doctor, the second of the set. Despite the recent controversy regarding Nugent’s comment at the National Rifle Association convention in St. …
Opening night features the world premiere of "Jewtopia." Showings of "Behind the Orange Curtain," a film about teen prescription drug abuse in Orange County, are nearly sold out.
If you noticed a few extra stars in the sky Thursday night, it could have been the sparkling reflection from the red carpet at the 13th annual Newport Beach Film Festival. The romantic comedy Jewtopia made its world premiere at the Big Newport Theater and its all-star cast walked the carpet for a crowd of enthusiastic reporters and flash-happy photographers. In the movie, Tom Arnold -- a self-proclaimed film festival junkie -- plays gynecologist Bruce Daniels. Having made his rounds at Tribeca and Sundance, he thinks the Newport Beach Film Festival stands up well against the festival heavyweights. "They've done an amazing job in their 13 years of building a festival," Arnold said. "For them to build this festival here so close to L.A., …

Recent comments got him booted from a Kentucky line-up, but he'll be in San Juan Capistrano Thursday night.
Rocker Ted Nugent may have been kicked off the bill in Kentucky, but he’s coming to San Juan Capistrano Thursday. Nugent of “Cat Scratch Fever” and other 70s tunes’ fame, is also known for his conservative viewpoints. Inflammatory remarks he made earlier this month – that he’d be “dead or in jail by this time next year” if President Obama wins re-election – apparently caught the attention of the Secret Service. Nugent made the comments during an interview at the National Rifle Association convention in St. Louis, comparing Obama and his administration to "coyotes" that needed to be shot and encouraging voters to "chop [Democrats'] heads off in November,” according to the Huffington Post. That was enough for promoters of a military concert …
