Dalai Lama Visits Our Neighbor to the South

Tibet's spiritual leader's talks will be broadcast live over the Internet.

The Dalai Lama, Tibet’s spiritual leader, that nation’s political leader in exile and the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize recipient, will be just a few miles south of us in San Diego this week as part of a two-day symposium at UC San Diego, San Diego State and the University of San Diego.

According to organizers, the symposium will "provide a thought-provoking forum to inspire new discoveries and expand our understanding of humanity." The Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibet, is said to share his views on upholding ethics, practicing forgiveness and tolerance, and coping with the challenges found in today’s society.

Begnning with his arrival Tuesday, the Dalai Lama will maintain a full slate of private and public appearances. The latter include:

Wednesday, 9:30 a.m.: The Dalai Lama and two UC San Diego scientists — Veerabhadran Ramanathan and Richard Somerville — will discuss “The Global Impact of Climate Change: Balance Through Universal Responsibility, Compassion and Human Consciousness.” The event can be viewed at uctv.tv.

Wednesday, 1:30 p.m.: “Cultivating Peace Through Justice” will be the Dalai Lama’s topic at Jenny Craig Pavilion at the University of San Diego. The talk also will be shown on closed-circuit television at these campus locations: Frank’s Place, the Institute for Peace & Justice Theatre, Maher Hall, Salomon Hall, Shiley Theatre and the University Center’s Room 107. It will be streamed live at sandiego.edu/dalailama/media.

Thursday, 9:30 a.m.: In San Diego State University’s Viejas Arena, the Dalai Lama will address “Upholding Universal Ethics and Compassion in Challenging Times.” The talk also can be seen at sdsu.edu.
