Flu Season is Back in San Clemente: Find Flu Shot Locations Here

The flu is now considered "widespread" in California, according to the state health department.

More people are contracting the flu in California "over the past few weeks," the state health department warned Friday.

Flu cases typically increase in December and January, with a peak season from February to March, according to Dr. Ron Chapman, director of the California Department of Public Health.

While the number of cases is about average for this time of year, hospitalizations are higher, the health department said.

The year's most prevalent bug, flu virus H1N1, is preventable through vaccination. Chapman recommends vaccination for anyone six months and older, especially for people at higher risk of severe influenza, like pregnant women and the obese.

"This year's vaccine is an excellent match against this year's influenza strains," Dr. Chapman says. "There is no shortage of vaccine in California and it is not too late to get vaccinated. I encourage everyone to get vaccinated to protect not only themselves, but those with whom they come into contact."

Signs of flu include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, headaches, body aches, chills and fatigue.
