How to Help Families Affected by the Newtown School Shootings

People all over the world want to know how to help Sandy Hook residents following Friday's horrifying mass shooting.

In the wake of the unfathomable tragedy at Sandy Hook School Friday, people from all over the world have sent an outpouring of support to the victims, their families, the heroes and the community.

And as the world mourns the tragic loss of 26 lives, including that of 20 young children, people simply want to know how they can help.

Already the United Way of Western Connecticut, in partnership with Newtown Savings Bank, created the Sandy Hook School Support Fund to help provide support services to the families and community that are affected.

Send Letters and Cards to Newtown

The U.S. Postal Service has set up a post office box for the public to send its condolences to Newtown. You can send letters and cards to P.O. Box 3700, Newtown, CT 06470.

Sandy Hook Elementary School PTSA Fund

A former Sandy Hook Elementary School student named Ryan Kraft, also a longtime neighbor of the Lanza family, posted a Local Voices blog on Newtown Patch saying he set up a fund to help heal his community.

Instead of giving your money to non-profits that often pay their executives big, big salaries and benefits, I urge you to send whatever money you wish to spend directly to one of the impacted families. It's not that difficult to find out how. Either that or go help a homeless mentally ill person. Try to get him or her help before he or she goes off and hurts someone. The government doesn't seem to care. There is not 'war on mental illness' like there is a 'war on drugs', is there? You see, the government doesn't make money off a 'war on mental illness' so chances are will never see one. It's sad. All of these maniacs who commit these atrocious acts are mentally ill. Research it. It's not about guns. It's about mental illness. Wake up!
