PHOTOS: SC Celebrates Marines' Homecoming

San Clemente welcomed home the 2nd Batallion, 4th Marines, with a victory parade on Avenida Del Mar. They returned from Afghanistan earlier this spring.

June gloom didn't dampen the spirits of the hundreds who lined Avenida Del Mar Thursday to celebrate the homecoming of San Clemente's adopted 2nd Batallion, 4th Marines.

Heralded by members of San Clemente City Council, the 1st Marine Division Band, fellow veterans, support organizations and dozens of classic cars, members of the 2/4 paraded down Del Mar Thursday morning, ending the procession with a ceremony at in the Pier Bowl.

The unit after nine months overseeing important infrastructure projects, combat missions and troop training in Afghanistan.

First and foremost I want to say welcome home and thank you for your service. Next I would like to express my concern about the day and time the parade was held. Why was it scheduled on a day and time that people were at work and school. I was quite disappointed I wasn't able to attend. I would have also liked for my son to be there. Our kids need to get back into patriotism and being thankful and appreciative. A welcome home parade for veterans is a great way to help kids put a face to the Americans that are fighting for us. I really hope that events held in the community for military in the future will take place at a time when people can attend.

I felt the same way. However later learned that the Marines themselves choose the day "Flag Day" and the time. I do think we could have advertised it better.
