North Beach Locals Gather Bikes for Kids

A couple of men from San Clemente's North Beach neighborhood are teaming up to order, assemble and donate bicycles for the Orange County Firefighters' Christmas toy drive this year.

The Orange County Fire Authority's 2012 Spark of Love toy drive will be receiving at least half a dozen bicycles this week, organized, collected, assembled and delivered by two North Beach men.

Pete van Nuys, who owns the Urban Bicycle Outfitters bike rental shop at the North Beach Metrolink station, and resident George Gregory had ordered six or seven bikes as of Tuesday. Van Nuys said they plan to assemble them Thursday evening.

San Clemente's new Mayor Bob Baker pledged $130 for to buy a bike when Gregory and van Nuys announced their plan at Tuesday's city council meeting.
