North Beach Residents Launch Community Group

Four North Beach residents are starting up an association they hope will be able to sponsor neighborhood events and give their neighborhood a voice at the city level.

San Clemente is full of organizations representing different neighborhoods and interests such as the Downtown Business Association or the Las Palmas neighborhood council -- even the Los Molinos Business District merchants powwow together from time to time.

Now a few residents in North Beach are starting an organization to plan neighborhood events and give the area a voice at the city level.

Don Slater, who has recently spent time lobbying for a dog beach and more dog access to parks in San Clemente, is one of the four aiming to build the group.

"We want to lift up the vibe... so businesses can start doing better and everyone can have some community pride," Slater said.

The nascent group is planning to kick off their work with some complimentary activities at the North Beach Metrolink platform at 7:45 p.m. Dec. 8 when the annual OCTA Toy Express train stops in San Clemente. Slater said plans are still up in the air, but kids selling baked goods to support Courtney's SandCastle will be there, as will some food, hot cocoa, carolers and some other booths.

Other ideas that have been kicked around include some kind of weekday farmers market.

"We try to bounce ideas off each other and find out things to do to improve the neighborhood," he said.

Slater also said the association could be a good agent for lobbying San Clemente City Council for grant money or other resources for the neighborhood.

Others involved in the group include Rey Harju, Gene Gilbert and Dave Gutierrez.

I've been working with those organizing over the last year. They have some great Ideas. I will continue to assist them by taking a proactive approach to NB. It's my hope that all business and interested Residents join in this activity. They have put last years measure A behind us and want to move forward. The city has already appointed a city planner to interface, like we've done in other areas of the city. Let's work for the good of NB and all of SC.

gee we can start with sidewalks the miramar the cummunter center and a big green park sign me up
Lindsey Hanson November 03, 2012 at 03:58 PM
As long as this is not another sad attempt at erecting a mini mall at North Breach. Lets enhance what we have. I love the idea about a farmer's market. Heck Del Mar gets all kinds of traffic already. Maybe we should relocate it to NB??? The dirt lot between Kaylani and Ichibiri definitely needs some love. Now if only we could get the owners of Ichibiri and Kaylani to step up their game, it be wonderful. Could you image??? And the Mirimar hopping. Sadly there is not much we can do about 7-11. But again as long as this is not another attempt at a land grab and a mini mall I'm down. How does one join the association? Lets mend the community and make NB great. It needs polishing.

hi lindsey buy the 7-11 with parking moneys for parking now thats a view i find it strange the jims are sneaking and sniffing around and only deal with like minded if we had sand id ask them both to &^%& it
Jim Evert November 03, 2012 at 05:59 PM
Lindsey - Your right on in terms of doing positive things in NB. I've proposed that we not only put parking in the dirt lot, but do it with a lot of landscaping so it is no longer an I sore enterance to SC . Also I've had several meeting with the Miramar owner. I think his plans including renovation of the theater to an entertainment center has a better chance of becoming a reality then previous proposals. I'm making sure the city is being propactive. Probally premature to discuse, but i want people to know that that we're not sitting still.
Jim Evert November 03, 2012 at 06:15 PM
George - Please don't try to find something negative in everything. Some of us actually try to do things that are right for SC. Also - i know you maynot believe it - But I've asked staff to once again take a look at the truck parking concerns you have expressed - Alway felt there is some validity to your comments.

Was a just an oversight or a deliberate stacking of the deck that our pro-North Beach Group—the North Beach Green Alternative—that advocates the Ole Hanson Beach Park for North Beach was not invited to join this group. Is this a legitimate group that wants to improve North Beach or a front group to bring back the LAB or some variation of it. Time will tell.
Tom Barnes November 03, 2012 at 06:25 PM
Sorry, it should have read "Was it just an oversight."
Gene Gilbert November 03, 2012 at 08:49 PM
Don't worry, you're invited as well, Tom. Anybody is welcome to join us. Just send us an email to info@northbeachcommunityassociation.org and we'll make sure you are on the list and kept up to date with news and events in North Beach.

sorry Jim you made it clear that working folks should be persecuted when the petition I gave you was used as a attack list tell me what's anybody's upside in signing a petition ever again more prosecution and profiling say high to everyone at the country club darling

I think that the common ground that everyone has, is a more fun North Beach. This can be achieved quickly with simple non permanent improvements. If North Beach is a more exciting and interesting place to visit and live in, everyone will benefit. Durring this period of time if everyone could just listen to all the ideas first then rework them constructively, we will all have a better experience. Ideas are a good thing, there are no bad ideas. We will keep track of all the suggestions as they may be the key that unlocks a new door down the road. I have not seen nor heard any discussion of erecting any thing larger then a small EZ-UP. I have been in on a lot of conversations and I can tell you this is an open, happy, excited, motivated & creative group of people. Some people will feel it is loaded unevenly, keep in mind that every group starts small. This one will grow to be evenly distributed very quickly. It would be a great loss of great minds to have it otherwise. Be positive at the meetings and encourage ideas and above all remember it is always easier to pop a balloon then it is to blow it up. Don

Hi Lindsey, thanks for your interest in NBCA. Just send us an email to info@northbeachcommunityassociation.org and we'll make sure you are on the list and kept up to date with news and events in North Beach.
Linda Sadeghi November 05, 2012 at 12:21 AM
Tom, you learned of this group only through a very deliberate and welcoming outreach by us on a door to door basis. There is no hidden agenda. There are no land grabbers. I received your email indicating interest and responded to you personally. If you are a North Beach resident or business, please join us with a clear mind as there is much work to do. We are all stakeholders in this area through our residency, our business or property ownership - all big investments of time, energy and/or monies. North Beach needs a clean slate and fresh agenda; baggage, politics and prejudices should be left behind.
Bill S November 05, 2012 at 04:08 AM
i only hope that everyone is Really invited to join and help here.
Linda Sadeghi November 05, 2012 at 05:17 AM
You have our email now multiple times and you need to use your real name and address to sign up, sorry. If you choose to really step forward, send your email to: info@northbeachcommunityassociation.org and we will put you to work.
