Toll Roads Reply to Patch Letter to the Editor

A reader took the agency to task for a bill that grew too fast. Here's where he went wrong.

Mr. Paul Carlton’s letter to the editor (How a $6.75 Toll Became a $57.50 Bill, posted April 25) brings up some of the concerns we hear from people not familiar with Orange County’s toll roads and the electronic payment options. For anyone who finds themselves on the 73 Toll Road without paying, there is an easy remedy on the home page of our website and free app called One-Time-Toll.

One-Time-Toll was developed exactly for the situation Mr. Carlton’s granddaughter found herself in. The toll could have been paid online or through our app, within 48 hours after her trip. After 48 hours, the violation process begins. The directions are clear on our website www.thetollroads.com. Also, 32 clearly-visible blue signs have recently been installed on The Toll Roads notifying drivers of the One-Time-Toll payment option.

The penalty for not paying is the toll plus $57.50. If payment is not made with the first notice, the total penalty will rise to the toll plus $100. If that is not paid, a hold can be placed on your car registration until the penalty is paid. The penalty does not rise above $100.

May 13 will be the last day customers on The Toll Roads will be able to pay their tolls with cash. The implementation of the all-electronic tolling program includes an outreach campaign to the tourism and hospitality industry so that visitors are notified about how to pay on Orange County’s toll roads.

From time-to-time we hear from people who have relied on their GPS and did not realize they were on a toll road.  It is a reminder to all of us that a GPS is a driver’s co-pilot and may not have all the rules of the road programmed into its system.
