Annual Plein Air Art Contest Kicks Off

Twenty local artists stand to win thousands in prizes for painting San Clemente.

The following is the press release from the San Clemente Art Association announcing its annual plein air competition:

San Clemente resident artists Rick Delanty, Alan Nowell, Dave Donaldson, Mark Donaldson, Pam Hill, Ruth Yuhas, Tara Sood, Jan Tidemanis, Sharon Langdale, Carol Nordman, Patti Prather, Tom Herrington, Sylvia Sinclair, Jennifer Friend, Linda Parsons, Vic Cumming, Lily DeBernardi, Robyn Trimm, Kathleen Robison and Shelby Allen will compete for awards in San Clemente’s Paint San Clemente plein air event. The yearly competition is sponsored by the San Clemente Art Association, a 59 year-old nonprofit organization and will take place June 16-24, 2012.  Proceeds from this event fund SCAA’s art scholarship program benefiting San Clemente schools and students.

 San Clemente Art Association’s Paint San Clemente runs June 16-24, 2012. This week long event includes: a Plein Air Painting competition, a Quick Draw painting competition, a 2 day Outdoor Art Exhibit and Sale plus an Evening Gala to end the week’s activities. Prominent Southern California artists compete for $13,000 in cash prizes and awards.  All events are held at the San Clemente Community Center unless otherwise noted.  Events planned for Paint San Clemente week are:

 Plein Air Competition, June 16 through June 23: Historic San Clemente comes alive through the eyes of Hicompeting plein air artists who “paint San Clemente” and the beauty of this “Spanish Village by the Sea.” The public is invited to view the artists’ progress as they paint each day throughout the community.  Winners are announced and recognized at the Collector’s Evening Gala Saturday evening, June 23, 6:00-8:30 PM held in the San Clemente Community Center Auditorium.

Quick Draw, Saturday, June 16:  Artists can choose to paint posed models and still life sets on the lawn of the community center or other points of interest between Avenida del Mar and the Pier Bowl area from 12:30-3:30 PM. Quick Draw paintings will be judged and awarded at a wine and cheese reception at 4:30 PM along with a sale of the paintings.  All unsold paintings will be on display through June 22.

Children’s Art Fun 101, June 16:  A children’s art experience has been added to the week’s events. In an effort to encourage artistic growth in young people, local children have been invited to participate in this art demonstration led by renowned Orange County artist Ray Gould. Art Fun 101 will be held on the grass of the community center from 10-12Noon.  

Two Day Outdoor Artist Exhibit and Sale, June 23 and June 24: Plein air artists display and sell works painted during Paint San Clemente week at this outdoor show held on the lawn of the San Clemente Community Center, from 10 AM-4 PM. Admission is free.

Original Art Drawing, June 23rd: Be the lucky recipient of an original piece of art. Three award winning local artists:

Rick Delanty, Steve Kell and Alan Nowell,  have donated paintings to be given away during a special drawing held at 1:00PM June 23rd. Entry forms may be obtained at the Art Exhibit or at the San Clemente Art Gallery.  A person must be present to win.  

Paint San Clemente Collector’s Evening Gala, June 23: Culminating the week long activities is a social evening featuring the recognition and presentation of awards to competing artists. The public is invited to attend along with collectors and art enthusiasts at the San Clemente Community Center, 6 PM-8:30 PM. A buffet dinner and a variety of musical entertainment will be provided. Admission is $35.00 per person.
