San Clemente Expands Street Art Program

After the successful pilot project to hire artists to paint local utility boxes, the city is adding five more.

From the city of San Clemente --

The City of San Clemente and the San Clemente Art Association (SCAA) are pleased to announce that a new round of “Street Art” is starting in early 2013.

The City of San Clemente and SCAA will continue last year’s highly successful public art and utility box beautification project, know as “Street Art”.

2012, identified five traffic controller boxes in public spaces to showcase public art painted by local artists. These original pieces of art depict San Clemente’s culture, traditions and history.

With the success of the pilot program, the City is once again looking for individual artists, or teams of artists, to create art for five more specific traffic control boxes located along public streets in San Clemente.

The chosen artists or teams of artists will each receive a $500 honorarium and a voucher for up to $200 in project materials. Interested artists are invited to submit one application and up to 3 conceptual renderings during the period from January 7, 2013 to February 22, 2013 by 5:00 p.m.

Applications must be submitted electronically to ParrettB@san-clemente.org. Applications received after the February 22nd deadline will not be considered.

All applications received will be reviewed by a jury of artists, art professionals, residents, and community representatives. The City and SCAA anticipate awarding the grants by spring 2013. The

application is available on the City’s website at www.san-clemente.org/streetartinfo or by emailing your

request to Breanna Parrett at ParrettB@san-clemente.org. Questions or concerns should be directed to Amber Gregg, Associate Planner at 949-361-6196 or GreggA@san-clemente.org.
