SONIC OC: Nuclear Surfer

From our archives: Local musicians create a surf-rock video lampooning the nuclear power industry.

In honor of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Japan Task Force recommendations, Sonic OC opened its lead-lined vault to retrieve this video gem, originally published April 3:

Reader Bill Donati turned me on to his cool surf-rock tune lampooning the nuclear power industry, specifically mentioning the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station in the lyrics.

The song, which Donati wrote, features lead guitar by a San Clemente musician who has since moved to North Carolina, Donati said in an email.

Although the song and video were created a couple of years ago, they're timely with all the recent fuss over the San Onofre plant.

Donati himself is involved in numerous projects in town. He gave Patch some rocker resume info via email:

I came out of Ardent in Memphis [a recording studio with ties to Alex Chilton and Big Star]. Rolling Stone called Ardent "Abbey Road on the Mississippi."

I was the drummer in Lawson and Four More and The Goatdancers. Ace/Big Beat released Ardent's archival material in 2008.

The Goatdancers blow everybody away. Listen to our psychedelic mindblower: Patches of Dust - The Goatdancers (YouTube).

I'm really a pop rocker. I get airplay on Fab 4 Radio, a Beatles station. They play my early songs and newer songs. My song "Studio 2" debuted on Fab 4 Radio in 2009.
