Sig Alert: Big Rig Tips Over

The offramp at Avenida Pico is closed during cleanup.

UPDATE: At 4:16 p.m. with details of the incident.

Two big rigs collided today in San Clemente, causing one to turn on its side, blocking all lanes on the southbound offramp at Avenida Pico.

California Highway Patrol Officer Chris Goodwin said two tractor trailers were traveling southbound just north of Pico partially side-by-side at around 9:25 a.m. when the truck in the far right lane unexpectedly turned into the lane to his left.

He suspects the second truck was in the first's blind spot.

The collision sent the second truck, a 2008 Volvo big rig, careening across the No. 4 lane, down the embankment and onto the offramp, where it rested, blocking all three exit lanes, Goodwin said.

The driver of the Volvo semi, a 32-year-old man from La Mesa, received minor injuries but was not taken to a hospital, Goodwin said.

The driver of the truck that made the unexplained manuever, a 40-year-old man from Fontana, was also not injured. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts and alcohol was not a factor, Goodwin said.

"It was just a collision. there was not criminal activity," he told Patch.

The CHP declared a Sig Alert, which was not lifted until 2:02 p.m., according to a CHP dispatcher.
