High Winds, Low Humidity Spells Danger

A high wind warning, coupled with a Red Flag warning, poses a danger of uprooted trees, downed power lines and fires.

The high wind warning issued for Los Angeles County remains in effect today, with coastal residents being warned to remove all outdoor furniture and close all windows before gusts reach their peak.

Very strong winds will be capable of downing trees and power lines, knocking down outdoor objects, creating flying debris and causing dangerous driving conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles.

According to the National Weather Service, the effects of a cold low pressure system near Las Vegas and strong surface high pressure over the Great Basin have combined to produce a very strong offshore wind event.

The wind event is expected to last until Friday afternoon, though more winds are expected over the weekend, the NWS said.

These winds will also help to maintain low humidity readings, especially over the coasts, the NWS said.

In addition to the high winds, a Red Flag warning was in effect today through late Friday afternoon over Los Angeles County, cautioning of high fire danger, with flames easily spread by high winds.
