A benchmark Anderson Valley vineyard, Breggo Cellars acquired the Savoy Vineyard in April 2011. Planted by Richard Savoy in 1991, the vineyard is located very close to the valley’s mid-point, just west of the town of Philo. Rich Savoy first purchased a homestead high above Boonville in in 1984 and began planting his small parcel with grapes. At the time, the valley had just a handful of vineyards, but Rich’s passion for Pinot Noir led him to this remote place. It was not the first time Rich Savoy built a business around a passion, as a 25 year old in 1967, Rich opened the acclaimed Green Apple bookstore in San Francisco’s Richmond District. Rich soon began to look for a larger vineyard site near the valley floor. The cool nights and pleasantly warm summer days around the Philo area intrigued him, and knew he had struck gold with the gently sloping southwest facing pasture near the junction of Gowan Creek and the Navarro River. With much work, the ground was prepared, drainage installed, and a pond built. The first vines of Savoy Vineyard went into the ground in 1991 with additional acreage added every few years throughout the 90s. Since the sale of the Philo vineyard in the spring of 2011, Rich Savoy continues to advise on the farming of the vineyard and his involvement in the property is highly valued. The vineyard is planted to a diverse blend of Dijon and Heritage clones of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Spread over 44 acres, the vineyard is made up of 34 sub-blocks which are each managed individually to maximize quality. Breggo continues to sell fruit from Savoy to many of the highly esteemed wineries that helped build the vineyard’s reputation, including Littorai and Radio Coteau, as well as to some newcomers like Kutch, Auteur, and Peay. Breggo’s Savoy Pinot Noir bottling consistently offers the illusive combination of concentration and elegance. To learn more about Breggo Winery, visit their website: http://breggo.com/
