Little curiosities...

Growing up often means forgetting what the world looked like when we were two feet tall. Sometimes we need to move and see life from below if we want to introduce kids to our part of the world.

Remember that time in your life when everything seemed so big? Disney World, your apartment before you moved in your stuff, your bank account before paying rent... or even just the simple things in life like your dinner or a book you just can't get through.

When I was younger we got a miniature horse for christmas. We found her after a long scavenger hunt to the barn. Her name was Toots and I remember her being GIGANTIC. In reality, nowadays she would probably only go up to my hip... but when I was little, she was huge.

This weekend I got to experience that feeling again.

I was sent to a pretty straightforward assignment, an event in Lake Forest called . It was an event intended to introduce the community to the many facets of law enforcements. People were invited to share food, talk to the officers, pet the horses from the mounted police and even pet the bloodhounds used in investigations.

After a quick loop around the event, I realized that simply shooting it wasn't going to cut it.

So I decided to shoot the event from a child's perspective. This was a bit of a height problem because for some silly reason I wore a skirt to the event... but I decided to open my eyes and see the event from their eyes, as much as I could.

This is how the event seemed after I opened my eyes. Those big red fire trucks... really were HUGE FIRE RED firetrucks. It was amazing how different everything seemed once I was able to really see.

I realized that it wasn't about educating the adults or creating a sense of community, it was about introducing the children to all those parts of government, and help them understand how they are there to help.

It was about petting the bloodhounds, and climbing all over those police cars, and talking to the officers in the blue shirts and introducing the kids to the huge animals and even bigger vehicles.

I really realized how gigantic the world can seem... and sometimes you need somebody to help you tell the difference between clydesdales and miniature horses.

Your local eyes,

Chelsea
