Surfing through the day

My second Patch assignment is what I refer to as a 'gift from the photo Gods.' I guess I could more specifically call it a 'gift from my Editor'... (thanks Adam!)

It was yet another assignment where I just had to take a moment and be grateful for my job. Sitting on the beach listening to good music, hanging out with great people and photographing surfing... what can be better?! The weather ended up being nice after the initial morning hours of dreary skies.

This was my first time photographing a surfing competition, and while I'm not extremely happy with the product, I am happy with the amount of things I learned throughout the day. The most important being that a 70-200 mm lens does NOT cut-it for surfing photographs. The images I came away with were not technically amazing, but they were fun to shoot, and the next time I will definitely be exploring lens rental options and will be there with a 40o mm.

I shot a lot of surfing, but with the equipment I had the better photographs came from activities happening on the beach.
