North Beach Group Organizing Car Show

The North Beach Community Association wants to assemble a cadre of classic cars in the beach parking lot to complement the annual Avenida Del Mar show.

Residents in June may expect 50 to 60 classic cars to line up in the North Beach parking lot for display to the public after cruising the city, that is, if all goes according to the plans of the North Beach Community Association.

The Association is asking the San Clemente City Council Tuesday for a fee waiver for the event permit -- it's scheduled for June 8, a day before the big classic car show on Avenida Del Mar -- but city staffers say the event is too late notice, according their May 21 agenda report.

The aim of the association is to showcase North Beach and spur economic growth, and staffers note their successful participation in the Metrolink holiday show that helped draw more than 1,000 people to the North Beach Metrolink Platform.

But, according to the report, the car event would cost the city $1,000 to $2,000 in traffic barriers, lost meter revenue, police traffic control and other necessities.

The event is meant to dovetail with the Downtown Business Association's annual car event the next day, but because of the late date, the DBA doesn't want to be responsible for promoting it or recognizing it officially this year, according to the report. Volunteers for the June 9 event have agreed to help at the June 8 event, however.

The San Clemente City Council meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the San Clemente Civic Center, 100 Avenida Presidio.
