OC Clerk to Begin Issuing Same-Sex Marriage Licenses on Monday

Thousands of gay couples across California are expected to to flood various county offices in the coming days to wed, after last week's U.S. Supreme Court decision to uphold the Defense of Marriage Act, essentially lifting the ban on same-sex marriage in the state.

Couples in San Francisco and Sacramento counties were able to file for marriage licenses immediately following the Friday decision, as county clerks offices stayed opened for extended hours.

But Orange County couples have had to wait until Monday.

Starting tomorrow, the Orange County clerk-recorder will begin to issue licenses beginning at 8 a.m. and continue during normal business hours at the main office in Santa Ana, as well as branch offices in Fullerton and Laguna Hills.

Additionally, since unlike other places in the state, the Orange County clerk's office was not open on Saturday to accomodate the demand, they office will be open on one Saturday in July.

An announcement posted on the clerk-recorder's website says its offices will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 27. Those Saturday hours will apply at the clerk-recorder's main office in Santa Ana as well as those in Fullerton and Laguna Hills.

"We're listening to what our customers tell us they want," Clerk- Recorder Hugh Nguyen told the Los Angeles Times. "We'll continue to find ways to help make things easier for them."

Couples who take advantage of Orange County's Saturday hours should fill out applications online at www.ocrecorder.com before showing up in person, Nguyen told the Times
