Some North Beach Residents Organize Against Rooftop Bar Proposal

Some residents of North Beach this week received flyers in their mailboxes urging them to speak out against a proposed rooftop bar at 1509 El. Camino Real.

"There is a proposal to permit a restaurant/bar/nightclub... which will have a rooftop bar/nightclub with an outdoor daily/nightly band capable of producing an amplified 96 decibel level," states the flyer from North Beach Property Owners and Residents Coalition. "Yes, that's right! That is as loud as an outdoor rock band! It seems incomprehensible that the city would allow this, but that is what is planned and city staff is supportive."

The planning commission in March sent the plan for the rooftop bar back to the drawing board to get more information about how the sound would be perceived by neighbors, and how the venue would affect parking in the neighborhood.

The flyer also argues the noise would agitate animals at the adjacent animal hospital, crowd parking on neighborhood streets and reduce property values.

The proposal comes before the planning commission June 5, according to the flyer, but the planning commission agenda had not been published on the city website as of Friday morning.

If the commission were to approve the rooftop bar, the San Clemente City Council will still have final approval.
