Highest Point in San Clemente Gets a Name This Month

To come up with a name for the highest point in San Clemente, it took a contest and a committee.

And the winner is … San Clemente Summit.

The San Clemente City Council is expected to officially name the spot, at an elevation of 1,008-feet above sea level right in the middle of the Cristianitos Trail near Talega, this month.

The contest was announced in August, with the winner to receive a $100 gift certificate to the Fisherman's Restaurant at the pier. The city received 87 proposals. A committee of hiking enthusiasts winnowed down the choices after hiking the trail themselves, just to make sure the name fit.

Resident Dave Pherrin came up with San Clemente Summit. Unfortunately, Pherrin will not be able to attend Tuesday's meeting and will receive recognition in person at the Dec. 17 meeting, said city spokeswoman Laura Ferguson.

For fun, Patch is printing a sample of the other name suggestions:

  • Stairway to Heaven
  • The Pause that Refreshes
  • Inspiration Point (sounds like a make-out place to us!)
  • Top of the Clemente
  • San Clemente Rooftop Summit (a reference to the proposed rooftop bar?)
  • Swegle’s Point (shout out to longtime San Clemente journalist Fred Swegles, though we’re sure he’d want to correct the punctuation)
  • Tip of Talega
  • Sea to See
  • Surf Peak
  • Mt. Everest Jr.
The City Council meets 6 p.m. Tuesday at the San Clemente Civic Center, 100 Avenida Presidio.
