San Clemente High's Auto Shop Contamination-Free

Students to return to their regularly scheduled program on Monday.

Students in San Clemente’s Auto Academy program will return to their shop classroom Monday, the Capistrano Unified School District announced today.

With the recent hiring of an auto shop teacher, the move marks a return to normal for a program that has been in upheaval since the beginning of the school year.

Students have been displaced from the classroom for about a month because it was contaminated with dust, some of it containing led.

Additionally, up until this month, the students have not had a teacher. Auto Academy Director James Dunlap quit a few days into the new year, and his interim replacement, Robert McCarroll, also quit a few days into his stint.

The district found a replacement, Warren Cesar from Yucca Valley High School, who started last week.

“Students in San Clemente High School’s Auto Academy will return to their classroom and shop on Monday, Nov. 18, under the direction of the new teacher, Warren Caesar,” said CUSD spokesman Marcus Walton in a prepared statement.” Orange County Environmental Health received the results of their sampling this week and informed the district that the results were below state standards for lead dust levels.”

Parents were informed of the news by email on Thursday, Walton said.
