New Survey Shows Kids are at Risk of Summer Learning Loss

PRIDE Learning Center offers reading, writing and comprehension help for students with learning disabilities to help combat the summer learning loss

A recent study by Dr. Harris Cooper, professor of psychological sciences at the University of Missouri, estimates that summer loss for all students equals about a month of academic learning and that children with learning disabilities need even more reinforcement.  The summer learning loss is most severe among low-income students who lose up to two months of reading and writing skills.

Summer learning loss is cumulative.  It is estimated from the study that by the end of high school the summer loss can account for up to a four- year lag in reading and writing achievement, and it can have an effect on high school graduation rates.  According to the Annie E. Casey Foundation, “one in every six children who are not reading proficiently in 3rd grade do not graduate from high school on time, a rate four times greater than that for proficient readers.”

“I agree that kids deserve a break after working hard all school year,” says Lauren Rice, Director of the San Clemente PRIDE Learning Center, “but, summer learning loss can set many kids back several months, especially those that are already far behind their peers.”

PRIDE Learning Center offers weekly summer programs from June –August to give students a boost in their weakest areas.  The teachers at PRIDE Learning Center are all credentialed, have special education backgrounds and are Orton-Gillingham Certified.

“Our weekly one-on-one reading, writing and comprehension summer programs utilize our multi-sensory phonemic, Orton-Gillingham approach that we here at PRIDE are such experts at,” says Lauren Rice.  “It is not uncommon for our students to progress one entire reading level in just 4 weeks.”
