San Clemente Lifeguard of the Year 'Stoked' to Be Honored

Scott Brandenburg is the 2013 recipient of the annual award.

Scott Brandenburg, a 2009 San Clemente High School graduate and a former national longboard champ can add yet another accomplishment to his young resume, San Clemente Lifeguard of the Year.

The San Clemente Exchange Club has been handing out this annual award since 2004.

In typical San Clemente fashion, Brandenburg said he was “pretty stoked” when he heard he had been selected for the honor, which he thinks is “awesome.”

Now a senior lifeguard, Brandenburg has been lifeguarding since 2007. Knowing he was a great swimmer, his family pushed him into it, he said.

“I was kind of hesitant at first. I didn’t know what lifeguarding was all about,” Brandenburg said.

He’s made too many rescues to remember, but one memorable incident occurred just this summer, when a man fell unconscious on the San Clemente Beach Trail. He and another lifeguard took vitals and gave oxygen to the fallen beach visitor.
