Surf Designer Dies from Severe Asthma Attack

Surf Industry Designer Lian Murray passed away over the weekend in Newport Beach after suffering a severe asthma attack, Apparel News reported.

Murray, 54, of Newport Beach, died Sunday at Hoag Hospital, according to an Apparel News report. Murray's career included merchandising and design positions at Hurley International, Billabong and Quiksilver. In 2005 Murray started her own clothing business, Aqua IV, headquartered in Costa Mesa.

In a 2003 interview with Transworld, Murray described her desire to change the surfwear industry.

“Surfwear was grungy, and surfers didn’t have such a good reputation, but that wasn’t how I saw it," Murray reportedly said in the interview. "All the surfers I knew were cool guys, people who went to college. They’re all sorts of different people. So I saw a need there that could be fulfilled."

A memorial for Murray is scheduled for Nov. 10 at 11 a.m. at L. Street Beach in Newport Beach.
