Lessons Learned From 'Choosing Wellness'

Quick thoughts from "Choosing Wellness" columnist Rachael Dixon.

It's been just over two years since I wrote my first Choosing Wellness article and since then Patches all over San Diego and other parts of California have published over 180 of my articles for the column. Having the opportunity has blessed my family, friends and neighbors. I became the "go-to girl" for all things related to health, wellness and sports. Hardly a day would go by without a phone call, text, email or stop in street with people asking random questions. Those questions often turned into Choosing Wellness topics, which would eventually reach your computer screen. 

As this will be my last entry, I would like to share some of my final thoughts on this experience and what I have personally gained from researching health and wellness topics for two years.

First of all, I want say to I have found a lot of good news related to health and wellness. I know we can get inundated with hard, cold facts about the health in our country. However, the good news is that many of the conditions like type II diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and obesity can be minimized, if not eliminated, by making healthy choices like exercising, eating healthy and managing your stress.

Second, I want to bring to light one more time mental health conditions. So many people are suffering from depression, anxiety, paranoia, sleep disruption and other mental health issues. Our society needs to be more "accepting" of these conditions so that people are more likely to get help and treatment. Going to a counselor or mental health professional is just as important as going to the doctor for physical pain or discomfort. Emotional wellness is so important to the balance of our lives and you deserve to live in a world where you wake up and see the possibilities.

Finally, I want to emphasize how special it is to have peace and forgiveness in our hearts. I get the privilege of working with an elderly woman who suffered a stroke leaving her paralyzed on the right side and unable to speak. Every week I get to work with her and see her amazing spirit for life. She is not bogged down with guilt, anger, unforgiveness or regret. Her affairs are in order and she is at peace with her family. What a gift that is to her as she lives out the rest of her life with the reassurance that all is well.

Nooo don't go. Just when I found you. Seriously I've begun to read through your blogs and really like the one about treadmill interval training. I've copied it and will begin today. thank you for the tip.

Linda...glad to hear that an article could help you. Keep looking through the archives, there's lot of good stuff about exercise routines and fitness goals.

Yes, Linda, do read the archives. I've learned so much from Rachael over the past two years! Her columns cross my mind when I'm working out or thinking about having another Diet Pepsi (lol). Thanks Rachael for all of your work!
