Border Agents Nab 31 Lbs. of Coke at I-5 Checkpoint

According to the U.S. Border Patrol, a young man and woman were hauling the drugs.

Border Patrol agents seized 31 pounds of cocaine worth about $306,000 south of San Clemente Tuesday afternoon.

At 4:40 p.m. Tuesday, according to a U.S. Border Patrol press release, agents stopped a man and a woman--ages 21 and 19, respectively--in a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta, according to a release from the Border Patrol.

The agents at the I-5 checkpoint south of San Clemente noticed the couple's "nervous demeanor" and brought out drug dogs. The animals indicated there were drugs in the trunk, where agents found the 31 pounds of coke in 14 bundles.

The vehicle was seized and the couple, both U.S. citizens, were arrested.

According to the release, the Border Patrol also found 20 bundles of meth weighing 35 pounds and worth more than $700,000 behind panels in a Ford Fusion Feb. 17. Stopped near Murrieta in San Diego County, the car was driven by a woman who was a Mexican national.
