Border Patrol Finds More Than 9 Tons of Pot in Truck on I-5

Border Patrol officials find 218 boxes with marijuana on a tractor-trailer traveling on the I-5 in San Clemente.

A tractor-trailer, stopped by U.S. Border Patrol Agents in San Clemente, was found to contain more than nine tons of marijuana.

The vehicle was stopped at approximately 12:50 p.m. on Friday at the checkpoint on Interstate 5. Border Patrol agents questioned the 43-year-old driver and directed him to the secondary inspection area, where a cardboard box in the trailer was opened and found to contain a green leafy substance that tested positive for marijuana, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The truck was found to contain 218 boxes with marijuana, with an estimated street value of $14,766,448., according to a news release.

The driver, tractor/trailer and marijuana were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation, according to the news release.
