Methamphetamine Seized South of San Clemente

Border agents arrest suspect Sunday.

Border Patrol agents arrested a man Sunday as he allegedly tried to smuggle almost 7 pounds of methamphetamine through the border checkpoint south of San Clemente.

At 5:45 p.m., agents stopped the 21-year-old U.S. citizen at the I-5 border checkpoint. He was driving a 1995 Jeep Cherokee, according to a release by the Border Patrol.

Agents brought out their drug dog, which indicated drugs were in the car, the release states.

"A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed 2.98 pounds of methamphetamine inside of a fire extinguisher located on the rear seat," the release states. "An additional 3.97 pounds were located inside of a modified battery casing, which contained a motorcycle battery and space for the narcotics."

The 6.95 pounds of methamphetamine had an estimated street value of $139,000, the release states.

The patrol seized the Jeep and turned the drugs over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
