Caller Reports Bogus Telephone Repairmen

SHERIFF'S BLOTTER: Also, guy with phone asks to use a phone, begging gets out of control and a cheapskate gets upset when denied his freebies.

At 10:09 a.m. Thursday Dec. 19, a caller reported what appeared to be bogus telephone repair men at the intersection of Calle de Cerro and Avenida Vista Montana. The caller said two people were sitting at a green box, looking like they were monitoring calls. But they wore no work uniform and there was no phone company vehicle present.

At 8:21 a.m. Thursday Dec. 19, someone called the sheriff’s office to complain about a person who came to the caller’s door, asking to use the phone.  Then the man wandered off down the street, using a cell phone and checking out other houses. Deputies arrived and arrested a 25-year-old unemployed man who remains in custody in lieu of $40,500 bail.

At 9:20 a.m. Thursday Dec. 19, a caller phoned deputies to complain about a homeless man begging for money at the post office in the 500 block of Avenida Pico. The man, wearing a beanie and holding a “Please Help” sign, has been a continual problem, the caller reported.

At 12:31 p.m. Thursday Dec. 19, deputies received a report of a disturbance in the 1000 block of Avenida Pico. According to an employee of a nearby business, a patron comes in frequently, demanding freebies. When the employees refuse, the customer becomes verbally aggressive. The employee stated that the customer works nearby.
