Marine on Trial for Murder Says Killing Came as a Surprise

The ex-Marine is facing trial in connection with the shooting death of a fellow Marine over drug money; Carney blames his co-defendant.

The following is from an Orange County Register story by Vik Jolly about the continuing criminal trial about a Marine facing murder charged in connection with a 2008 killing.

A court-martialed Camp Pendleton Marine testified Tuesday in his murder trial that he did not expect a fellow Marine to fatally shoot a third Marine they wanted to confront about stealing drug money.

"I never wanted anything like that to happen," said Christian William Carney, 25, of Manorville, N.Y., on trial for the May 13, 2008, slaying in a secluded area of San Clemente.

He has "about a million regrets" about the incident, Carney said in response to a question from his attorney Jennifer Keller.

He had no idea Alvin Reed Lovely, then also a Pendleton Marine, would shoot Stephen Serrano, 20, Carney testified.
