Pendleton Blaze Out; No Injuries or Structures Lost

A base official said the fire was miles from any buildings, and firefighters from the base and Orange County were on scene.

A brush fire that started Tuesday afternoon at Camp Pendleton was extinguished before 8 a.m. Wednesday after burning about 75 acres of scrub land at the north end of the base.

The fire caused no injuries and no structures were lost.

Pendleton spokesman Lt. Ryan Finnegan said it was a flash grenade that started the blaze at Range 307, which was miles from any buildings or installations on the base.

"It's pretty isolated," Finnegan said. "Frankly, it's pretty much a big open space."

It started at about 6 to 7 acres in size Tuesday at about 2 p.m. Firefighters initially were monitoring the blaze, and worked to control it during the night. The fire is out partially from exhausting itself and partially from control efforts by four Camp Pendleton brush firefighting units and two from Orange County, Finnegan said.

Orange County Fire Capt. Marc Stone said Tuesday the OC Fire Authority sent in two brush units and another truck designed for structure fires to fill in at the Camp Pendleton fire station.
