Juveniles Suspected of Attempting to Rob Councilman; Stopped With Maglite

Councilman Jim Dahl's garage was burglarized while he and his wife were inside the home, Dahl said.

Two juveniles were arrested this week on suspicion of burglarizing Councilman Jim Dahl’s home early Tuesday, according to the councilman and police reports.

Dahl said he and his wife woke to hear their garage door opening after one of the suspects got into the car parked in the driveway and used the garage remote.

Dahl said he grabbed a large Maglite flashlight and called 911. Then he went downstairs and saw a male juvenile inside Dahl's Mustang in the garage, allegedly looking for items to steal.

Another subject was still in the car parked in the driveway.

Dahl said he pointed the flashlight at the suspected burglar in the Mustang as if it were a firearm, and the burglar ran.

Luckily, a deputy was stationed nearby, Dahl said. According to Sheriff's Department reports, San Clemente Police Services responded to the residence on the 200 block of Montalvo shortly after 1 a.m.

The Orange County Sheriff's website lists no information on the suspects because they are juveniles, but Dahl said the deputy held them at gunpoint on the street near the home until other deputies arrived and they were taken into custody.

Dahl said Thursday that the suspects had been turned over to their parents.
