The widow of Marine Sgt. Manuel Loggins gave birth to a daughter over the weekend, almost a month after an Orange County Sheriff's deputy fatally shot her husband.
A friend of the Loggins family, Desiree Lomack, confirmed the birth in an email correspondence with Patch.
She said there were no medical problems and the family is well. Loggins' wife entered the hospital Saturday, but Lomack wasn't sure exactly when the girl was born. (In deference to the family's request for privacy, Patch isn't printing the daughter's name.)
In related news, Lomack is helping to organize a fundraising dinner for the Loggins family at 6 p.m. March 17 at the San Clemente Elks Lodge.

"This is a $15-per-person dinner at the door," Lomack wrote on a Facebook page promoting the event. "Ribbons will be sold for a dollar each at the door as well. There will be some guest speakers to talk on Manny's behalf. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me thru email or facebook. Thank you and hope to see all the supporters there."
Lomack said she'll also be accepting items for the new baby at the dinner.

Dunn told Patch earlier this month that his investigation so far makes the shooting look "completely unjustified."
The family has declined to talk to the press.
Shortly before 5 a.m. Feb. 7, Loggins allegedly sped into the parking lot of San Clemente High School and ran through a closed gate leading to the athletic fields, according to the deputy's account.
Loggins then walked off into the darkness toward the athletic fields, making irrational statements, the deputy said.
He then returned to the car, ignored deputy orders, got into the vehicle and tried to drive away, which is when Sandberg shot him, according to officials.
