Man Dies in Wreck on I-5 Near Vista Hermosa

Speed was a factor in the single-car wreck, a CHP officer said.

A single-vehicle wreck on the I-5 north, right past the Avenida Vista Hermosa exit, left one man dead Wednesday night.

At 9 p.m., the driver, whose name has not been released, was alone in a Chevy Colbalt driving at high speed when he made an unsafe right turn to avoid slower traffic, said California Highway Patrol Officer Chris Goodwin.

When the driver turned, he lost control, the Chevy left the roadway, it flipped an unknown number of times, striking multiple trees, Goodwin said.

The man, a 24-year-old from San Clemente, sustained fatal injuries and was not taken to the hospital.

Goodwin said the accident happened before it started raining Wednesday night, so wet roads were not a factor. He cited the high speed and unsafe right turn as causing the crash.

The Orange County Coroner had not released the man's name as of 9:30 a.m. Thursday.
