San Clemente Siren Testing Starts Monday

On Monday, listen for the sound of the sirens, also called growls. You may hear them from San Juan Capistrano, Dana Point and Camp Pendleton.

Southern California Edison will test its emergency alert sirens in San Clemente Monday.

On June 4, officials will begin sounding 19 sirens, one a time, for about twenty seconds each.

The sirens are part of the early warning system that notify residents of an emergency at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.

The siren tests are sometimes called "growls” because the siren sounds for about 20 seconds total, instead of the full 3-minute run that would happen during an emergency.

Growl testing in the city can run from two to five days, with multiple sirens sounded each day, according to the city website. 

Sirens sound between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. and are not tested on weekends. 

During a radiological emergency, all 50 regional sirens -- including those at Camp Pendleton, San Juan Capistrano and Dana Point, would sound at the same time for a full 3 minutes. 

Federal regulators require SONGS to test all 50 regional sirens four times a year.

Depending on your location in the city, you may also hear growl testing in Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano, San Onofre State Beach or Camp Pendleton.
