Small Electrical Fire Rattles San Onofre

No injuries or danger, plant officials say. Incident is reported to the NRC.

San Onofre can't seem to catch a break these days.

First came the January after an unexplained radioactive steam leak at the nuclear power plant. Then the . The latest snafu was a small electrical fire that erupted Friday afternoon.

Southern California Edison said the blaze was quickly extinguished, didn't pose any threat or hurt anyone, and took place in a "non-radiological" electrical panel of the Unit 2 reactor.

The NRC was immediately notified, Edison said in a press release, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The "unusual event" was reported at 12:49 p.m. Friday, and took San Onofre firefighters less than 45 minutes to extinguish, SCE spokesman Danny Chung told City News Service. "We haven't been able to assess the damage yet,'' he added. "We do know it was minor.''

Unit 2 has been out of service since Jan. 9. Both Units 2 and 3 remain shut down for steam generator testing and analysis. (Unit 1 was closed in 1992 over fears it could not withstand a major earthquake.)
