Squaw Valley Resident ID'd as Victim in Bizarre Car-vs.-Train Wreck

After flying off the I-5 Freeway, the car came to rest on the railroad tracks ... right before an oncoming train.

The San Diego coroner’s office has identified the driver whose life ended in a movie-like crash off the I-5 just south of the San Clemente Border Patrol checkpoint Sunday night.

Carlos A. Garcia of Squaw Valley died just after 9 p.m. Sunday when the speeding car he was driving flew off the freeway and onto nearby railroad tracks – in front of an oncoming train, according to the California Highway Patrol. The southbound Amtrak cut his car in half and ejected Garcia from the car.

He was pronounced dead at the scene because of his “obvious fatal trauma,” according to a press release from the San Diego Medical Examiner. An autopsy has yet to be scheduled.
