Van Crash Shuts Down Laguna Canyon Road For Over 10 Hours

The driver was arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of drugs.

As Laguna Beach Patch first reported last night, Laguna Canyon Road was blocked off in both directions for over 10 hours since 9 p.m. Tuesday after a van hit a utility pole by the roadside and knocked it over.

The road was finally reopened this morning just before 7:30, according to Lt. Jason Kravetz of the Laguna Beach Police Department.

The van's 18-year-old female driver, Sloane Violet Friedmann, an Emerald Bay resident, and her male passenger were not injured, but Friedmann was arrested after allegedly being under the influence of drugs.

The road was shut down completely between Canyon Acres and El Toro Rd. Representatives from Southern California Edison, Cox Cable and Verizon all responded to the scene and eventually figured out that the utility pole belonged to Verizon. A Verizon crew arrived on the scene at 2:30 a.m. to fix the damaged pole, which was unstable and connected to other utility lines that crossed Laguna Canyon.
