Artist Reception Set for Entrants in Logo/Fine Art Contest

Some 40 local artists have submitted designs for the city's upcoming general plan document.

The city of San Clemente and the San Clemente Art Association concluded its General Plan Logo Design and Fine Art Contest earlier this month.

The next step involves professionally judging the entries and awarding prizes to the winners, according to a release from the city.

An artist reception from 3 to 5 p.m. Sept. 24 at the San Clemente Art Association’s Art Gallery, at the Community Center, will be open to the public. All artwork submitted in the contest will also be on display and for sale.

"This contest was conceptualized by council member Bob Baker as a means of involving the talented local artists and graphic designers in the city’s general plan update, while utilizing their talents to incorporate colorful design enhancements—representative of San Clemente’s beauty—into the new general plan," stated the release from the city. "This long-range policy document will incorporate future decisions about land use, community design, transportation and more."

The general plan is now under consideration by an advisory committee of more than 25 members, who will make recommendations on the comprehensive package of zoning changes for the city. Council members have said they expect to approve the general plan update this fall.

Twelve winners will be selected; their art will be included in the general plan document, according to the release from the city.

One winner of the logo design contest will be announced. The logo will appear on the cover and inside pages of the general plan document. Also, the Best of Show winner's artwork will appear on a future city magazine cover. About 40 artists/graphic designers participated in the contest, with each person submitting anywhere from one to five entries.
