City Contest: Name the Highest Point in San Clemente

The San Clemente City Council is set to initiate the competition at the Tuesday meeting.

The highest elevation in San Clemente sits right in the middle of the Talega hiking and bike trail on the northeast border of San Clemente.

The San Clemente City Council Tuesday plans to initiate a contest to name the spot, according to the council agenda. City staffers will survey the site to find the exact highest point on the trail, and the winner's selection will appear on a plaque monument at the site, according to staff reports.

The Talega Moms Club is already planning to install a bench near the high point -- which is approximately 1,010 feet above sea level -- and a local Boy Scout troop will be installing the bench, according to the staff report.

Surveyors will have to also determine who owns the land on which the marker would be installed and obtain permission, the staff report states.

Councilwoman Lori Donchak proposed the contest at the July 16 council meeting "to promote civic pride and good health through outdoor activity," according to the staff report.
