Council to Consider Letting You Ride Your Bike More, Walk It Less on Beach Trail

While the sheriff's department has signed off on the plan, one city commission says don't do it.

Would you like to walk your bike less and pedal more on the San Clemente Beach Trail?

The City Council will take that issue up at its Tuesday meeting.

San Clemente Police Services has recommended that during the off-season months, cyclists should be able to ride their bikes south of the wooden bridge at Trafalgar Canyon, according to a staff report. The exceptions that would force a cyclist to walk would be during summer months, holidays and major events.

The recommendation would effectively shorten the walk zone along the trail.

However, the Beaches, Parks & Recreation Commission recently discussed the matter, and members recommend no changes to the rules. Commissioners felt crowds at T-street warranted the more product approach, according to the staff report.

The trail in portions overlaps with a service road, and it is in those areas where cyclists must get off their bikes and walk, according to the staff report, from June 15-Labor Day.

“Staff is likewise concerned with the safety of trail users and beach goers,” wrote Bill Humphreys, marine safety chief for the city. “However, staff believes that the crowds in this area are not substantially different than other areas of the trail where bike riding is allowed.”

The City Council meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 100 Avenida Presidio in San Clemente.
