San Clemente Council to Discuss Radiation Monitors

Council members may push for the EPA to install independent monitors around the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.

The San Clemente City Council, in response to requests by anti-nuclear protesters and a recent leak at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, will discuss whether to push for the installation of independent radiation monitors around the plant.

Local anti-nuclear groups like and have seized on the to redouble their efforts against its continued operation.

Over the past month-and-a-half since the tubes failed and the plant shutdown, the groups and their supporters have been calling for the installation of independent radiological monitors and money for a comprehensive disease study for the surrounding area to see if there are higher levels of cancer and birth defects surrounding the plant.

Also on the agenda are the results of a cost analysis for water and sewer rates. . The city hired a consultant last year to figure out a better way to bill customers that would cover maintenance costs.

The San Clemente City Council meets in council chambers, 100 Ave. Presidio, at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
