Improvements Sought For Bonita Canyon Tennis Courts

The city will consider repairing the tennis courts in Bonita Canyon and implementing a Joint Use Agreement so the public can use the courts at night.

City Council members will vote on a proposal to repair the Bonita Canyon Tennis Courts and allow public access to them at night.

The Public Works/ Engineering Division and the Beaches, Parks and Recreation departments want to temporarily patch, seal and resurface the tennis courts at a later date as part of the 2015 Capital Improvement Program. The city is also looking to install a Joint Use Agreement with Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD), which will allow the public to use the courts at night.

It is estimated that if the tennis courts are reconstructed, they will last for the next three years and then need additional repairs.

If approved, the fiscal impact will be $18,000 from the currently budgeted project, and remaining funds will be returned to the General Fund.

Currently, the tennis courts are available to the public when school is not in session and on the weekends. According to the city, the public would be able to use the courts at night if improvements are made to the lighting switches to install individual court timers and if a meter to track utility costs is made available. This project will not cover the lighting, fencing or drainage for the courts.
