IRS Revokes Tax-Free Status for 47 SC Nonprofits

Many are defunct, others have paperwork missing.

Almost 50 local nonprofit organizations in San Clemente will soon lose their tax-exempt status.

The IRS revoked that status for 275,000 nonprofits across the country because they didn't file required annual tax forms, according to The New York Times.

The IRS said it went to great lengths to notify nonprofits of their obligation to file the forms, but probably did not succeed in reaching all of them. Some IRS officials said most of the organizations on the list might no longer be operating, and several calls placed by the New York Times reached phone numbers that were no longer in service.

Many of the nonprofits nationally were already defunct, but many were organizations with large followings, like youth sports associations and other groups that hadn’t filed proper paperwork.

Shorecliffs Middle School Surfing, which boasts some of the top young surfers in southern California, is on the list, for instance.

Shorecliffs Surfing Coach David Hennings assured Patch the revocation was a clerical issue that would be cleared up before next school year.

"We're just getting the paperwork all together and submitted; it shouldn't be a problem," he said earlier this month.
