Lifesaving Citizens and Others Honored by Council

Men who rescued an injured friend, and a local Girl Scout who worked to prevent premature births are among those praised.

Three friends who saved another's life on a tennis court in Capo Beach were honored Tuesday by the San Clemente City Council.

The city and the Orange County Fire Authority honored residents Dave Gahl, Gary Story and Fred Butler for saving Erik Jansen when he fell and struck his head at the San Luis Rey courts.

The men asked a fellow tennis player to call 911 and then immediately began chest compressions. Paramedics directed them to continue CPR while they readied a defibrillator.

On Tuesday, Jansen stood with his friends as they received proclamations--he plans to start playing tennis again Thursday.

Also honored at the meeting was San Clemente Girl Scout Amy Duncan, who received the Girl Scout Gold Award for educating at-risk mothers on how to avoid having premature births. Her project also organized a donation of equipment for CHOC's neonatal ward.
