Camp Pendleton artillery units will be conducting a regimental size live-fire artillery training exercise through Feb. 12.
The live-fire activity is normal, according to a Marine Corps news release; however it will be done on a regimental level which may result in amplified noise. Also, 24-hour live-fire training will take place, Feb. 10-11. The training began Monday.
Depending on atmospheric conditions, the sound of the explosions may be amplified and heard up to 50 miles away.
"The sounds you hear are from the 11th Marine Regiment conducting training," 2nd Lt. Spencer Kenyon told Patch on Wednesday. To see a picture of the equipment they are using—the High Mobility Artillery Rocket Sysem—click here. The system has been used in Afghanistan, Kenyon said.
