Public Meeting Planned to Begin San Onofre Decommissioning

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced it will hold a public meeting Sept. 26 in Carlsbad to discuss the decommissioning process for the the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.

It will be the federal agency's first public meeting on permanently closing the plant. The meeting follows the decision in June by Southern California Editor to shut the facility.

At the meeting, NRC staff will discuss the decommissioning process for the plant's two nuclear reactors, as well as the agency's regulatory oversight of the  project.

The public meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Omni La Costa Hotel, 2100 Costa del Mar Road. Doors will open at 5 p.m. to accommodate security screening.

Southern California Edison, the majority owner of the plant, has estimated decommissioning will cost $3 billion. SDG&E, which is a part-owner, has warned its customers that electric bills may rise to pay for the decommissioning process.
