City Urges Caltrans to Reexamine Sound Wall

After residents complain, San Clemente asks the agency to reconsider the new I-5 sound wall near South El Camino Real.

It's the sound wall no one wants: Some residents to the west say it isn't long enough to block sound from their homes, while residents to the east say it demolishes their ocean views and bounces freeway noise into their homes and businesses.

The 16-foot sound wall recently went up along the I-5 Freeway near South El Camino Real.

San Clemente's city attorney thinks Caltrans might have violated the California Environmental Quality Act by not notifying residents east of the freeway that the wall was planned.

On Tuesday, dozens of residents from both sides of the wall came to voice complaints to the City Council.

In response, the council voted 4-0 to have the city attorney send a letter asking Caltrans asking to reopen the environmental review process.

Councilman Jim Dahl abstained because he owns property in the neighborhood.
