Saddleback Church Seeks New Home For San Clemente Flock

City Planning Commission will decide whether to give a permit to allow Saddleback Church of San Clemente to hold services at 1311 Calle Batido.

The Planning Commission will discuss Wednesday whether can build a new place of worship in San Clemente.

On June 6, commissioners are scheduled to consider a permit that would allow the Lake Forest-based megachurch to use land at 1311 Calle Batido for a church facility and associated parking.

Located in the Talega Business Park, the site currently houses a vacant lot, a parking lot and a two-story, 89,544-square-foot office building, originally occupied by medical research company Quest Diagnostics.

Saddleback Church's congregation in San Clemente currently meets at , at 700 Avenida Pico.

If commissioners approve the permit, the church would operate on both floors of the south half of the office building, according to the city staff report.

Church officials estimate the building, after remodeling, would hold 916 parishioners. It also would provide Sunday school nursery space for 110 children and seven Sunday school classrooms for as many as 462 children.

The church also plans to build a 166-space parking lot on the vacant land on site to increase available parking to 466 spaces.

City staffers recommend that city officials approve the permit.

  • Officials will also vote on whether to recommend that the City Council vote to lower the speed limit on the portion of Avenida Pico between El Camino Real and Calle De Los Molinos. Following the results of a traffic speed survey, city staff supports lowering the limit from 40 mph to 35 mph. To read the staff report on the item, click here.
